![]() ![]() Preoperative evaluationĭuring the initial consultation, a visual and tactile examination reveals the extent of abdominal skin laxity and excess fat. Patient assessment and treatment planningįleur-de-lis abdominoplasty is specifically designed for patients who present with an extreme amount of flaccid skin on the medial and lateral anterior abdomen following massive weight loss. In these patients fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty may be the more appropriate course of treatment as it addresses both the longitudinal and transverse vectors of abdominal skin laxity.Īs in conventional abdominoplasty, the fleur-de-lis procedure may include surgical fat reduction with liposuction as well as plication of the rectus abdominis muscle at the midline. If a prominence of lax skin is present on the medial abdomen and anterior flanks as well as the lower abdomen, resection in two intersecting planes is necessary. Treating longitudinal and transverse skin laxity of the abdomen after weight loss with fleur-de-lis abdominoplastyįor patients who have lost a significant amount of weight, traditional abdominoplasty may not be enough to flatten and tighten the abdomen as it only addresses excess skin in a single plane with a transverse-oriented incision on the lower abdomen. As a result, a larger amount of flaccid skin can be removed compared to conventional abdominoplasty with a single incision. The intersecting T-shaped incision that is the hallmark of fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty allows for resection of the excess skin in two planes. While a single incision on the lower abdomen can in many cases drastically improve the abdominal contours, some patients require a more extensive surgical procedure known as the fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty.įleur-de-lis candidates frequently have significant skin laxity of the medial abdominal region that may extend laterally past the hips. Skin laxity may develop on various body parts, although the midsection tends to be the primary area of concern.Īfter achieving a normal body mass index, some patients seek help from a specialist general surgeon to remove the excess skin and remaining superficial fat on the abdomen. It’s common for post-weight loss patients to have resulting excess skin and resistant pockets of fat following extreme dieting or surgical weight loss procedures such as the sleeve gastrectomy.
